CHAPTER SIX

“I think I need to go to the police station and file a report,” I said as Kyle drove us to the hospital to pick up Granny.

“Yeah, you could file a police report, Angie. But what proof do you have? Your Granny won’t even tell you who pushed her. You file and nothing happens—things could just go worse for your Grandmother. They may not stop at pushing…”

I blinked back tears. “Great, Kyle, that’s just want I wanted to hear.” This whole thing was a big, fat mess and I was responsible. All because I opened that stupid ‘Bargains for Your Dollar’ store.

“I’m not saying this to upset you,” Kyle said. “I’m just stating the facts. I want to talk to your Grandmother first.” He glanced back at Monty in the rear view mirror. “Then Monty and I will take care of this loan shark business.”

“What are you two going to do?” I asked nervously.

“That’s nothing for you to worry about,” Kyle said.

“How can I not worry about it?” “

“I want you to focus on earning the cash to pay off your Gran’s utility and other bills by filling those bakery orders.”

“I just don’t know how those can get filled,” I said glumly.

“You don’t have much choice in the matter. You’ll just have to satisfy the orders. She needs the money.”

“How would I do that? Granny can’t bake with that arm.”

“I didn’t say your granny would fill the orders, I said you would fill the orders.”

“Me?” Despite growing up with a baking granny, I didn’t inherit the skill or gain it through her tutelage. When we were 15 years old, she enrolled Missy and me in a cake decorating class at a local craft store. The first week I was excited. The prospect of making flowers, animal shapes, curly cues, and hearts with icing sounded like fun. But then I tried it. While some of the other women had on neat, ruffled aprons and whipped out gorgeous designs, I had icing from one end of the room to the next. My apron was caked with fondant. I was a mess, my area was a disaster, and my cake...well. And here I was supposed to do professional decorations?

“We’ll help, right Monty?” Kyle said.

“Yep, that’s for sure.”

“Look guys, I admire your can-do attitude, but we are talking about someone’s wedding cake here. I don’t want any crying brides because their cake is toppled over.”

“I don’t see that we have much choice,” Monty said.

“We?” I raised my eyebrows.

“I want to support you and your family in every way. And that includes getting your Gran back to being debt free.”

“Gosh, Monty, that’s so sweet.” I felt ashamed. Here I was moaning that I couldn’t bake and he was offering to jump in to support my Gran, a woman he barely knew.

“Hey, woman, I just found you and I know you’re my soul mate. I can feel it.” Monty reached from the back of the car and brushed his hand lightly against my neck.

“Oh wow,” I murmured, butterflies racing through my tummy.
